The Pastoral Office of Ministry for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing is committed to supporting Catholic deaf and hard of hearing persons in achieving their full inclusion in the life of the Church.
Members in the deaf community in the Archdiocese are served through programs which foster spiritual growth, leadership and family enrichment.
We are currently working on a nation-wide project where we are translating the Youth Catechism (YOUCAT) into American Sign Language (ASL). This project will take three to five years, and we decided to undertake this in order to reach out to the overlooked Deaf Catholic community. Since English is a second language for the Deaf population, using their native language to explain the Catholic faith will help them understand what we believe.
Also, we do ongoing outreach events to the Deaf youth, Deaf young adults, and Deaf Catholic community, including workshops, religious education, and fellowship events.
Prayers or donations to support either endeavors would be greatly appreciated!
