Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, a Catholic lay organization, leads women and men to join together to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person service to the needy and suffering in the tradition of its founder, venerable Frederic Ozanam, and patron, St. Vincent de Paul. As a reflection of the whole family of God, Members, who are known as Vincentians, are drawn from every ethnic and cultural background, age group, and economic level. Vincentians are united in an international society of charity by their spirit of poverty, humility and sharing, which is nourished by prayer and reflection, mutually supportive gatherings and adherence to a basic rule. Organized locally, Vincentians witness God’s love by embracing all works of charity and justice. The Society collaborates with other people of goodwill in relieving need and addressing its causes, making no distinction in those served, because in them Vincentians see the face of Christ.
We offer a variety of services, all geared to benefit the less fortunate in our area. Ongoing and special project needs are listed below.
1. Our St. Vincent de Paul Dining Room meal service needs include financial support for purchases of food and supplies, utilities, cooking staff, repair and maintenance. We will serve over 250,000 meals this year. How many people can you help this holiday season? $1.00 provides a hot meal for one hungry person. $100 provides hot meals for 100 people. $600 feeds all our Dining Room guests for one day.
2. Every day, our Bishop Ott Shelter Program provides shelter to over 100 homeless men, women and children in our community. Our needs include financial support for food, supplies, daycare expenses, transportation costs, case management salaries, repair and maintenance, utilities and other direct service related costs. We are in the process of constructing a major addition to our Bishop Ott Sweet Dreams Shelter, which will focus on unmet needs in our community, specifically, families with male children over the age of 12, and will open before Christmas. We currently provide over 25,000 guest nights of shelter a year. A $10 gift will provide a guest night of shelter for a man, woman or child. How many guest nights can you provide?
3. Our St. Vincent de Paul Community Pharmacy needs include financial support for the purchase of brand name and generic medications, utilities, repair and maintenance. This year, our pharmacy will fill life-sustaining prescriptions worth $1 million for people who have nowhere else to turn. $28 fills one prescription. How many can you fill?
4. We have identified the need for a chapel on our campus. The desire is to provide a place for needy/homeless guests to pray or for silent reflection. A large number of guests have requested this, as well as volunteers who would also like a quiet place to pray and reflect. The current estimate for this project is $350,000. Can you make a gift to help us make this project a reality?
