St. John Paul II Catholic Mission of Rutledge, TN was founded in August 2011 and provides a home for Catholics, direct service to the local community, and spiritual guidance to any seeking it. We are centered on Christ Jesus and his mission to call all to repentance and enter the Reign of God. In the spirit of Jesus, we say, "Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest."
St. John Paul II Catholic Mission is located in the very heart of the Appalachian Mountains of East Tennessee. It is the first Catholic Church ever established in Grainger County. Many of our English speaking parishioners are elderly and on fixed incomes. Many of our Spanish speaking parishioners work in the agricultural industry, including the famous Grainger tomato fields. Their income is often less than $24,000 a year. But while we may be lacking income, we are abundant in the work of the Holy Spirit! We are a vibrant and growing community even though dependent on large subsidies from the Glenmary Home Missioners. Our storefront church is bursting at the seams and no longer meets our needs. Our aim is to build a very simple multipurpose building on a beautiful property in Rutledge acquired through the generosity of the Catholic Foundation of East Tennessee. Our goal is to raise $10,000 for building materials required for our new spiritual home. Through the spirit of Jesus Christ, much of our labor will be donated. Your prayers and financial support will put willing hands and hearts to work in the Lord’s vineyard. Please consider making a donation through #iGiveCatholic today.
